After a 25 year hiatus, Land Rover’s Defender is finally back in the United States. This vehicle, which has been around since the 1940s, is iconic to the Land Rover name and may be a serious contender for a great off-roading car. The Land Rover Defender closely resembles the Jeep Wrangler due to its boxy, rugged design, and it has its origins as a British military equivalent to the Willys Jeep. Both the Defender and Wrangler feature boxy silhouettes and utilize upright pillars and flat panels that emphasize a 'form follows function' philosophy. But, will it be able to beat the infamous Jeep Wrangler? As we take a closer look at the 2021 Land Rover Defender and 2021 Jeep Wrangler, we’ll compare and see which vehicle will reign the champion for 2021. Our goal is to provide a fair and balanced comparison, so you can form your own idea about which suits your needs best, recognizing the bounds of each vehicle’s capabilities.
We’ll start off our comparison of these two beauties by their looks. The 2021 Land Rover Defender took us by surprise as they strayed away from their iconic design and seemed to twist it with the look of a modern SUV. While some people may have liked the direction that they went with this, we were not major fans. It would have been nice to see a major redesign or more of a car that played more of an homage to the design that made this car so well known. While we do appreciate a bit of modernizing to cars, we just were not fans of this particular redesign and found it a little awkward looking. If you are looking for a car that has stayed true to its time, the Jeep Wrangler would take the cake on this one. Although the Wrangler has stayed pretty authentic over the years, it has received some modernization, but it has never changed the overall identity of the vehicle. Specifically, the Wrangler is known for its removable roof and doors, making it a popular lifestyle vehicle for open-air driving and customization. The Defender also features a rear-door-mounted full-size spare tire, similar to the Jeep Wrangler. Imagine taking either of these vehicles out under the sun, tackling tough stuff and surfaces with confidence.
However, looks are not everything with cars, what is inside matters too. As we take a look at the interior, one of the most important things that we can check out is the space and comfort. Jeep Wranglers have never been the most comfortable car, however, they have recently been working on making their cars more comfortable, they are still behind in comfort when compared to the Land Rover. The Land Rover’s seats are much more comfortable and the interior is more spacious as well. The Land Rover also has the option for 8 passenger seating, which is possible with their four door model. With the Wrangler’s four door model, the largest possibility is 5 passenger seating. If comfort and space are very important to you in a vehicle, the Land Rover would definitely be the better option for those things. The Defender is often preferred for camping and overlanding due to its spaciousness and capability, making it easy to set up a bed in the back or enjoy a warm night by the fire after a day of off-roading. The Wrangler, on the other hand, is considered a great lifestyle vehicle due to its removable roof and doors, perfect for those who want fun and versatility on their adventures. Both vehicles are equipped to handle challenging terrains, making them ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who hope for memorable experiences and a cozy, warm retreat after a long day.

While we are checking out the inside of both of these vehicles, it is important to check the overall quality and technology as well. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is the most technologically advanced Wrangler generation yet. This means that it has Apple CarPlay, Uconnect, Amazon Alexa, 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot, 8.4 inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Forward Facing Off Road Camera, 7 inch Driver Info Digital Cluster Display, Remote Access, Search Send & Go, Vehicle Health Report, and much more. Along with all of this pretty neat tech, the overall quality of the interior is pretty nice. Although some parts may seem a little cheap, it is overall good value. The Defender, meanwhile, offers significant luxury and technology features, including heated leather seats and advanced infotainment, which are often upgrades on Wranglers. It is also equipped with advanced electronics, such as 360-degree cameras and a wade sensing mode to assist in off-road conditions. The Defender was awarded Car of the Year in December 2020, despite initial criticism regarding its design and reliability. When considering costs, it’s important to compare not just the purchase price, but also running expenses, maintenance, and potential repairs for both vehicles, as these can vary significantly and impact long-term ownership. In the business of off-roading and overlanding, these factors, along with online feedback and comment sections, often influence which vehicle enthusiasts choose or have sold in the past.
Off-roading isn’t just a hobby—it’s a way to connect with the world beyond the pavement, to create unforgettable adventures, and to test the limits of both driver and machine. For those who crave the thrill of tackling rugged terrain, the Land Rover Defender and Jeep Wrangler stand out as two of the most confident and capable vehicles on the market. Both the Wrangler and the Defender carry a rich history of off-roading excellence, making them top picks for anyone looking to experience safe and exciting journeys off the beaten path.
When it comes to off-roading, secure verifying of a vehicle’s abilities is essential. Whether you’re a seasoned explorer or just starting out, knowing your car can handle the unexpected gives you the confidence to move forward and respond to whatever the trail throws your way. The Land Rover Defender, with a starting MSRP around $50,000, offers a blend of modern technology and classic durability, while the Jeep Wrangler, starting at about $28,000, makes adventure accessible to a wider audience.
One of the key concerns for off-road enthusiasts is how a vehicle’s suspension and design help it adapt to different surfaces. The new Defender features advanced suspension technology, allowing it to glide over rocks, mud, and sand with ease. Meanwhile, the Wrangler’s suspension is engineered for versatility, providing a smooth ride whether you’re on the road or deep in the wilderness. In just a few seconds, drivers can switch between terrain modes, giving them the control they need to tackle any challenge.
Both the Land Rover Defender and Jeep Wrangler are built to carry you, your gear, and your hopes for adventure into the unknown. Their robust construction and thoughtful engineering mean you can access remote areas, connect with nature, and create stories that last a lifetime. Whether you’re reversing down a tricky path or forging ahead into new territory, these vehicles are designed to keep you confident and in control.
As we continue this comparison, we’ll dive deeper into what sets the Defender and Wrangler apart. From their unique histories to their modern features, we’ll help you decide which off-road star is the right fit for your next adventure. So buckle up—your journey into the world of off-roading starts here.

The 2021 Land Rover Defender is pretty technologically advanced as well. Some of the features it has are Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Pivi Pro infotainment system, 10 inch touchscreen, Optional 11.4 inch touch screen, Remote App, 12.3 inch optional interactive driver display, Head-up display, Wi-Fi Data Plan with up to 20GB per month, 3D Surround Camera System, Clearsight Interior Rear View Mirror, Wade Sensing, and more. While it seems like the Land Rover Defender offers much more in the realm of technology, some users have had many issues with it and too many of the parts seemed cheap. For the hefty price of the Defender, to us none of these things should be a concern, therefore we do not think it is a good value or that all of the extra features are worth the hassle you may encounter. If Land Rover is able to fix these issues however, then they may reign superior with technology and quality.

If you want to compare overall performance and power, the Jeep Wrangler would take the cake on this as well. The Jeep Wrangler is able to accelerate from zero to sixty in about 6.5 seconds, while their v8 engine is able to in about 4.5 seconds. The Defender takes 7.6 seconds, and even with the 6 cylinder engine, it is only able to reach 5.7 seconds. The fuel economy of the Wrangler is better as well. It does about 22 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. The Defender does about 17 miles per gallon in the city and 20 miles per gallon on the highway. But, the defender does have a larger fuel tank of 23.8 gallons, whereas the Wrangler only has 17.5 gallons. Both cars do well on and off the road. The Land Rover may be a smoother ride, but it is significantly more expensive.
Overall, the 2021 Land Rover Defender and 2021 Jeep Wrangler are both fantastic cars, but the 2021 Land Rover Defender did not meet our expectations like we had originally hoped. For the price you pay, it does not pack the punch it should, however, it is more comfortable and larger. If you are looking for the better value, the Jeep Wrangler is the better choice.
Whether you are looking at a vintage Land Rover Defender or a 2021-2023 Defender, they are all going to cost you a pretty penny. An original Defender will likely cost anywhere between $50,000 and $100,000, and the same goes for a new Land Rover Defender where the base model MSRP is around $53,000 with the top-tier trim being the Defender 110 V8 having an MSRP of almost $115,000.
